A Mind-Numbing Backcountry Skiing Mecca

Countless seasons spent skiing in Rogers Pass and six years of writing a guidebook, and you’ll be surprised to hear that I’m still chasing lines off my list. It’s an incredibly expansive backcountry area. Rogers Pass isn’t just another zone in the guidebook; ask anyone in the ski touring or ski mountaineering world, and they’ll tell you the exact same thing: this is the de facto Canadian mecca for the sport. As your ski guide, I’ll have the pleasure of showcasing terrain that feels like it was built specifically for backcountry skiing – vast alpine bowls, cathedral stands of old-growth, towering couloirs that pull your eye up before your legs are ready, and peaks that dominate the skyline for hundreds of kilometres. With the parking lots sitting right off the Trans-Canada Highway, we spend our time skiing, not slogging.

The Snow

Our snowpack varies between seasons, but you can reliably expect depth ranging from 250-400+cm. To grant you some perspective, standing on the ground mid-winter, you wouldn’t be able to touch the snow’s surface. Snow quality here is the kind other mountain ranges get jealous of. Its home range, the Selkirk Mountains, is situated in a Goldilocks zone for never-ending snowfall of excellent quality. If you’re looking for an abundance of dry snow, this is it! Spend a few days with me, and we’ll move through completely different terrain types: powder laps in ancestral forest one day followed by exciting alpine objectives the next – all within a jaw-dropping, glaciated landscape that rewards people with unforgettable, world-class experiences.

The Terrain

Rogers Pass is known for its plethora of advanced-to-expert terrain, and that’s exactly why hiring a guide who knows it intimately matters. But there’s also enough lower-angle terrain tucked into the zone providing the right entry point for intermediate backcountry skiers hungry for progression toward more difficult objectives, and build from there, season over season, the same way I have. There’s another reason why our guided Rogers Pass ski touring trips are perfect for you. The terrain of Rogers Pass best suits advanced-to-expert skiers capable of at a minimum 900m of vertical gain. For intermediate skiers/snowboarders and guests looking for a less strenuous experience, the Revelstoke Mountain Resort’s backcountry is our recommended trip.
