Revelstoke sits between two ranges of the Columbia Mountains: the Monashees to the west, known for tree skiing packed with natural booters and steep chutes, where a thick snowpack makes landing big features easy, and the Selkirks to the east, better known for ski-mountaineering — glaciers, bowls, and craggy peaks — though they still hold excellent old-growth tree skiing. What sets the area apart is the range and accessibility of that terrain: valley bottoms sit around 500m while glacier-capped peaks top out near 2750m, so most routes deliver serious vertical and demand a solid fitness level. Thankfully, the lift-accessed backcountry beyond Revelstoke Mountain Resort’s boundary opens up friendlier options for a mellower tour.

Revelstoke sits in the world’s only inland temperate rainforest, and the mountains around town see roughly 12–18m (40–60ft) of high-quality snow each winter — closer to champagne powder than coastal cement, despite the sheer volume. The alpine snowpack often runs 3–5m deep, enough to bury most summer rock hazards by midwinter. Because storms track west to east off the Pacific with orographic lifting, the Monashees pick up 20–30% more snow than the Selkirks. Don’t forget your snorkel; you might need it for those very deep days.

The Revelstoke Mountain Resort‘s backcountry playground offers convenient access to fantastic skiing and snowboarding. Note: A backcountry access lift ticket must be purchased. At a minimum, you should be able to climb 600m of vertical and spend 6 hours in winter conditions. Given the complexity of backcountry terrain, this tour is recommended for intermediate to expert skiers and riders.
The programs are exclusively guided by ACMG-certified guides, who underwent years of robust training in some of Canada’s most complex avalanche terrain. Our guides are committed to offering a top-tier guest experience without compromising on safety.

Guided Backcountry Skiing Day In Revelstoke
7:30 – 8:00 AM: Meet at the agreed location (trailhead or base of the RMR gondola), sign waivers, check gear.

8:00 – 8:45 AM: Backcountry safety orientation
9:15 AM – 4:00 PM: Ski touring and splitboarding in the mountains
4:00 PM – 4:30 PM: Back at the car
